Using General Resources#

Resources are the main building blocks of Rulex Platform.

Once users are logged into the application, they see, by clicking on the Explore Resources icon, all the resources for which the view permission has been granted. They can then only interact with these resources as long as they are working with the software.

Resources allow the user to automate operations, to store sensitive information, to segregate data and to scale its solution at enterprise level. For this reason a knowledge about the different types of resources, their behavior and their characteristics is extremely important to correctly use Rulex Platform application.

In this page we will focus on the general resources type, i.e. the resources that are available throughout the whole Platform and that can be viewed and managed in multiple components.

These are:

To dive deep into the different characteristics of the various resources, please see the singular resource reference page, available at the links above.

Here, we will focus on their most common properties.

To create new general resources you need to open the Explorer (for more information, see page: Exploring Rulex Platform) and follow the steps down below:

Procedure

  1. Click the Explore Resources icon to open the Explorer pane.

  2. To be able to add general resources deactivate the primary resource filter by clicking on the Primary filter on the upper right side of the panel.

  3. Hover over the Plus button.

  4. Select Add new <Resource> (substitute <Resource> with the desired general Resource).

  5. Follow the dedicated wizard of creation different for any general resource (more info into resource individual pages)

  6. In the last entry of the wizard you will be asked to enter a unique name for your resource.

  7. Click Create: the new resource will now be added to the list.

Resources Context Menu#

Once the resource is created you can interact with it by right-clicking on it. This operation opens the Resource context menu.

Context menu operation works on the group of selected resources. Not all the operations are possible if multiple resources are selected. In the description above we will highlight operation which are feasible on more than one resource.

Note

To select more than one resource you need to press Ctrl or Shift button and left-click on the desired resource. A lighter color will inform you the resource is correctly selected.

It contains the following entries:

  • Delete: it permits the user to delete the selected resources (valid also for multiple selection).

  • Rename: it permits the user to rename the selected resource.

  • Information: it permits the user to see internal information about the resource (if the user has modify permission, resource can be modified to redefine its definition).

  • Permissions: it opens the Permission panel where resource permission can be modified. More information available in a dedicated page

  • Export: it permits the user to export the selected resource on file (possible only if the user has share permission on the resource). Further information available here

  • Copy: it permits the user to copy the selected resource and subsequently paste them in a different environment location (valid also for multiple selection)

  • Cut: it permits the user to cut the selected resource and subsequently paste them in a different environment location (valid also for multiple selection)

Further specific entry to the context menu could be present according to the particular resource type. Those entries will be described in detail in the specific resource pages.

Tip

Movement of resources can be performed also by drag and drop. To open a new environment it is necessary to stay for few seconds with the drag cursor or on the Explorer Path or on an Environment entry in the Explorer Pane.

Importing Resources#

In any component of Rulex Platform, you can import general resources within your environments, so that they are available for any user with view access to the environment itself.

Note

By default, imported resources inherit the same permission list of the environment in which the resource is imported.

They can be specialized by accessing the Permission Panel once the import was finished.

Prerequisites

Procedure

  1. Open the Explorer and uncheck the Flow filter option;

  2. Hover the Plus button and click on the Import Resource button;

  3. Select the Source type (Saved or Custom) and insert the filesystem configuration, if you have chosen the Custom mode.

  4. Choose the resources to import by clicking the Select button in the Path 1 section.

  5. If you want to import more than one resource at the same time, you can:

    • Click on the Add new path button, located next to the Select button, to add a new path for a new resource. You can add as many paths as you want.

    • Select a folder instead of a file (by clicking on the icon folder in Local File System case or in the Select Files Tooltip by right-clicking on folder entry or by clicking on folder icon). Any resource inside the folder will be imported.

    • Click on the X button, located next to the Select button, to cancel the corresponding path.

    • Click on the Delete all paths button, located under the Add new path button, to cancel all the inserted paths.

Imported resource names will be automatically deduced from the file names just considered, automatically disambiguating to prevent equal name resource.

  6. Click on Import to complete the import operation or on Cancel to close the Import resource panel without importing resources.

Note

You can always edit the resources’ details by right-clicking on the resource in the Explorer and choosing Information. In the Information pane, click on the pencil button to edit the resource details accordingly (see various resource configurations)

Exporting Resources#

In any component of Rulex Platform, you can export general resources toward files, once you have share permission on the considered resources.

Resources of the same type can be exported together in different files with a unique operation; to do that first you need to select them.

Prerequisites

  • you must have navigated until the environment where the resources you want to export are located.

  • you must have share permissions on the selected resources to export.

Procedure

  1. Open the Explorer.

  2. If you want to export more resources of the same type in one operation, select them using Ctrl+click or Shift+click for a range.

  3. Right click onto the resource you want to export.

  4. Select the Source type (Saved or Custom) and insert the filesystem configuration, if you have chosen the Custom mode.

  5. Choose the folder where you want to save the exported resource.

  6. In case of a single resource export, you can fill the Insert desired resource name text box with the chosen name for the output file.

  7. If necessary, check one of the following boxes:

    • Add current date and time as prefix

    • Add current date and time as suffix

to add an automatic suffix/prefix which depends on the timestamp of the operation.
